PUBLIC OUTRAGE

In the mid-20th century, the town of Daruvar sent a delegation to visit Augustinčić with the intention of purchasing one of his sculptures for Daruvar’s Kupališni Park. However, Augustinčić demanded a significant sum for his works and was unwilling to negotiate. The residents of Daruvar would have left empty-handed if they hadn’t seen a sculpture covered with boards and junk in the sculptor’s studio yard. Since it was evidently a sculpture that did not hold much significance for Augustinčić, he agreed to sell it to them for the exact amount of money they had with them.

However, that was not the end of the troubles for the delegation from Daruvar. When the sculpture was placed in the park, it caused public outrage as it depicted a completely naked woman. To solve the problem, the leaders of Daruvar planted greenery around the statue to hide it as much as possible from the view of passers-by.
